Many tours visit Kalibaru and this part of East Java on the way to Bali. It is a real pity most of the tours only for 1 night. Many participants of these tours complain as they wanted to stay a few more days in Kalibaru. Either to do one of the magnificent trips or just for a few days to relax (not in a big city) Rumah Kita is a small-scale Villa/Guesthouse that can cater for these wishes. From Rumah Kita one can do a variety of trips to the surrounding plantations of coffee, rubber (latex) and cocoa and the 4 National parks : Kawah Ijen High Plains, Baluran National Park and Meru Betiri National Park with its turtle beach of Sukamade. Also Alas Purwo can be visited with a boat trip through the mangroves (Only with low tide) But also small or big walks around Kalibaru are worth while as here you can have real contact with the local people to see how they live and work

Trips from Rumah Kita :
Although all trips are worthwhile ( you will see Indonesia from another angle and these trips are not yet spoilt by mass tourism) we like to elaborate a little further on 3 of these trips as these are most appreciated by our guests and by tourists doing a roundtrip Java/Bali. |
National Park Meru Betiri The trip is made by Landrover. Departure from Rumah Kita is after breakfast. In Glenmore the lunpia's for lunch are picked up and water will be bought. In Genten the trip goes to the south via Jajag and Pasangaran to the south coast. (Through papaya, coffee, rubber and cocoa plantations). Pick nick lunch near the fishing Village in the bay of Rajekwesi. After that the jungle starts and the road/path becomes really bad. Now you will understand why the trip is done by Landrover. The road winds op a mountain through the jungle. On the top you have the opportunity to make a walk down for 30 minutes, an hour or all the way. The driver will follow with the jeep and pick you up at the agreed time. After coming down from the mountain you have to reprt to the security staff of plantation Sukamade and continue through the plantation to the village and factory. Just efore you arrave in the village some rivers have to be crossed. |

Indian Ocean |
The mess of Sukamade has some basic rooms for visitors.
Normally arrival is between 15.00 and 16.00 hrs and you will still have time to
make a walk through the village of the plantation workers. In the National Park are only 2 villages that diappaer rather quickly. The permit for the plantation has been withdrawn to let nature take its course. So in about 20 year the whole plantation will be gone and consequently the plantation and factory becomes smaller by the year. More and more people move elsewhere and young people go to higher level education in Banyuwangi never to return. In the village is only electricity from the plantation factory and the power generator is switched off at 22 hrs. You will only have light after that time from oil lamps. When the evening sets in you will see hundreds of giant bats going to the fruit trees of the local people like in Kalibaru.
After diner you go by Landrover in 20 minutes to the beach. The last part (700 mtr) you have to walk through the jungle. Near the beach is a shed where they keep the turtle eggs until they come out. On the beach the local guide will look for tracks and if he has found a Giant Sea turtle he will signal with his lamp. The turtles coming to this beach vary in size from 150 - 350 kilo and lay on average 100 - 150 eggs. The animals are about 2 hours on the beach to dig the hole, lay their eggs and close the pit again. after 55 - 56 days the small animals will be coming out of the nest and crawl to the see as fast as possible.
As there are poachers the eggs are removed from the nest and put in the sand again in an artificial nest within a secure area. Just before coming out the eggs are move to big buckets with sand in the shed. The small animals are kept here for about a week before setting them out to sea. consequently 95 % survives the first 14 days while this normally is just about 10 %. The way back to the Mess goes via the same route and if lucky you will see deer, wild boar or civet (Wild junge cats) . The accommodation in Sukamade is very simple (No A.C.) and towels, soap and toilet paper is brought from Kalibaru. No running water , only a Mandi bak. (pour water over yourself with kind of smal pan, wash yourself with soap and rinse off with the small pan again). After breakfast the next morning you will have the opportunity to visit the very old plantation factory to see the processing of rubber. (not on Sundays). On the way back you will make a stop again in Rajekwsei to see the local fishermen return from their nightly catch. Around 13.00 hrs you will return to Rumah Kita, Kalibaru.

Included in the price of the trip are :
Entrance to the beach and the local guide on the beach have to be paid separately. Indication price for this trip is 100 Euro per person. (if with 2 people) with 4 people 90 Euro p.p. It is also possible to stay 2 nights. In that case you can make a jungle hike for one day with a local guide and if you have not seen a turtle you will have another chance.

Kawah Ijen vOLCANO AND HIGH PLAINS Click HERE to see a photo impression of the Kawah Ijen trip on You Tube To avoid the heath in the day this trip starts from Rumah Kita around 04.00 hrs. If available like with the trip to Sukamade with a landrover. The journey goes via Genteng to Banyuwangi and here you will turn west to Licin. After Licin you will travel over a huge Clove and coffee plantation and the last part through a fern forest with huge fern trees. In the part is a really very steep bit which is even for the landrover difficult to negotiate. The last few kilometers are easy through forest at the foot of the kawah ijen. You will arrive at the parking around 06.15 just after sunrise. |
From the parking lot you have to start walking . You are at an altitude of 1850 mtr and have to climb to 2350 mtr. The first bit is not so difficult but after 15 minutes it is becoming steeper en steeper. Most of the time you will be overtaken by the sulphur bearers going to the crater to pick up their load. This part is the most difficult bit of the trip. After about 50 - 60 minutes you arrive at the weighing station. Time to rest. From here you have a beautiful view over the high plains to the west on the other volcano's. Even in the distance you see the Gunung Raung (3333 mtr) near Kalibaru. If you look directly down you can see the parking lot through the trees. The rest of the walk (about 40 minutes) is much less difficult as you walk a path around the rim with very little altitude differences. After the last bend and still a surprise, you have a beautiful view on the crater with its blue-greenish lake. |
The descent into the crater is not recommended after an accident with a tourist , who fell down and was killed in 1998. From the edge you can see in the crater the place where the sulphur flows out of the wall. The sulphur bearers (Pikolan) carry 80 - 100 kilo from the crater to the rim and then down to the parking lot where it is pick up by a truck. The Kawah Ijen is very different from the Bromo because of the crater lake and the sulphur winning. But also , as it is a difficult trip, there are not hundreds of other tourists. Out of season you might even be lucky and be the only one. The return trip is via the same way (there is only 1 path) It really is getting hotter the lower you get and the higher the sun rises. Be careful as the sand on the path becomes dry and very slippery. Carry your camera in front of you. Upon return in the parking lot you can have a drink in one of the cafeteria's and then it is back to Kalibaru. From 1850 meter you go down to sea level and in Licin you pass the sulphur factory on the left. Arrival in Kalibaru between 13.00 - 14.00 hrs. It can be very cold on the mountain. It is not exceptionally when it is 0 (zero) degrees. There for put on warm clothes in layers. The less you need you can take off.
Sulphur bearer Kawah Ijen |
Price for this trip depends a lot on the number of participants. Transport only (1 landrover, max 6 people) is 65 Euro The entrance fee is 50.000 Rp per person and has to be paid by the participants themselves. In the huge crater of the Ijen High Plains (Kawah Ijen itself is a volcano on the rim of the huge crater) are several coffee plantations and they only grown Arabica coffee. Best coffee in the world only grown higher than 1500 mtr.) The centre of all these plantations is the village Blaau and in Holland you can buy coffee with the name of Blaau produced by the plantations on the Kawah Ijen High Plains. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The lake is the most poisonous lake in the world. If the water level is too high some water must be discharged. A dam on the low side of the volcano is opened and the water flows to the sea. The farmers are warned and it is not allowed to take in any water for irrigation for 3 days. The Ijen crater is part of the Merapi top . In Java there are 2 Merapi volcano's. The other one is the active volcano near Yogyakarta. |
